Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. A polling place or polling station (the latter is the less common usage, but favored in the United Kingdom and standard in Canada) is where voters cast their ballots in elections. Since elections generally take place over a one- or two-day span on a periodic basis, often annual or longer, polling places are often located in facilities used for other purposes, such as schools, sports halls, local government offices, or even private homes, and will each serve a similar number of people. The area may be known as a ward, precinct, polling district or constituency. The polling place is staffed with officials (who may be called election judges, returning officers or other titles) who monitor the voting procedures and assist voters with the election process. Scrutineers (or poll-watchers) are independent or partisan observers who attend the poll to ensure the impartiality of the process. The facility will be open between specified hours depending upon the type of election, and political activity by or on behalf of those standing in the ballot is usually prohibited within the venue and immediately surrounding area. Inside the polling place will be an area (usually a voting booth) where the voter may select the candidate or party of their choice in secret, and if a ballot paper is used this will be placed into a ballot box in front of witnesses but who cannot see the actual selection made. Voting machines may be employed instead. Some polling places are temporary structures. A portable cabin may be specially sited for an election and removed afterwards. Q. how do they place you where to vote? I never knew it was a big deal?? thanks guys! Asked by moniCACA! - Thu May 7 19:34:41 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. poll location is based on address. they actually have a roster of registered voters posted at the poll for "poll watcher" to see. It is a huge job to run a poll. It is set up the night before and they have to be there from 6am until they balance all the signatures with the # of ballots cast. I was a "precinct inspector" for the general election so I know this is accurate. I am also working at a poll for the 5/19 special election. Answered by San Jose - Thu May 7 21:09:19 2009 How long was the wait at your polling place and where are you from? Q. I'm from a small city near Akron, Ohio and I got to vote as soon as I walked in Asked by Stripe - Tue Nov 4 12:30:15 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. I live in Ohio too! I live in a small town, less than a 20 minute wait. The ones down town were liek 2-5 hours wait! I was like HECK NO, lol Answered by Ayla - Tue Nov 4 12:35:14 2008 Would offering flu shots at a polling place be considered bribery or 'paying for votes'?
Q. In Houston, TX an insurance company (I believe it was) offered free flu shots at polling places to residents in low income areas in order to encourage increased voter turnout. I thought it was a good thing because elderly people would get two benefits - to vote and the free flu shot. The Republican party threatened to sue the city because most of the polling places that they offered the shots in were in low income areas. So the city withdraw their approval to avoid a law suit. One other little thing - this must of been the LEAST reported news story because no one I asked about it had heard much about it and I thought it was a big thing. I thought I'd ask the question here - what do you all think? Was this an illegal act? Asked by samsam1s - Tue Nov 7 17:04:02 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Shotys are a very political thing. Most people completely misunderstand shots. They are of no benefit, except to the drug companies. Do NOT get vaccinated. A vaccinated person is MORE likely to get a disease than a non-vaccinated person. The whole theory of vaccination is flawed. It causes a weakening of the immune system thus making those who are innoculated more susceptible to disease. There are so many awful side effects to vaccination that it should be considered extremely dangerous. Just sit back and think for a while. Is there any sense in injecting a disease directly into your body. We have been subjected to an awful mind control program to enable the drug manufacturers to make a fortune.
